This kept me so amped up that I need to calm down first.
Edit: okay, here we go !

This was different than all of the other works from this author that I have read. Usually there is a haunting involved. Sometimes with a real haunting and sometimes a completely different explanation. Her ghost stories are among my favorite such types.

This was a different such horror story in which Coates uses her talent to spread out into other horror zones.

Tension built for me throughout the entire story

5 stars, easily. This is the best book you'll read this Halloween season.

Y'all I think I've been missing out on a really good author! I read Darcy Coates' short story Sub Basement a few years ago, (back when I still lived in my house with the creepiest basement on earth). And it was good! And now that I've read this bomb ass novel, all I want to do is read more!

There's definitely more Darcy Coates horror in my future. If anyone has one in particular they'd love to recommend, hit me up!

Solid 4.5 stars. I recently read several books by this author but I have to say that this was the best one thus far. Hunted is a dark book-a mystery thriller that will appeal to a wide audience.
Eileen goes missing while hiking solo in the large and desolate Ashlough Forest. Her brother and friends don’t think it was an accident-Eileen’s camera was found and they are convinced that the pictures show someone (or something) was hunting her. After losing faith in the local police, they head to Ashl

Don't start this book unless you have time to read it all at once because you won't be able to put it down. It was absolutely fantastic! Coates decision to write a lengthier story outside of her norm was well-played. I hope she continues to branch out. I'd also love to see her bring back Carla Delgado policing the same city & State Park or even another city/park somewhere else.
2.5 stars.

HUNTED, by Darcy Coates, starts out as the story of a missing hiker, Eileen Hershberger, and her friends' frantic search for the truth. Part thriller, part police-procedural, this story focuses mainly on the isolation and sense of confusion that accompanies being lost in a large expanse of forest, with no end in sight.

I guess I'm in the minority for this one, but I just never felt a "connection" to any of the many main characters. Their dialog, relations to each other, and how easily t

She only went off the trail for a moment...

Warning, warning, long review alert!

Oh boy, I was excited about this book. First of all because of Darcy Coates who writes some of the most amazing horror books, but secondly because this was different from her usual work. Those feature haunted houses that will murder you in your sleep, while this one was about a girl who got lost in the forest, met with a monster, and then how her brother and friends, the police, went to search for her and uncovered s

There's something in the woods...

When a young woman on holiday ventures into the forest for a day of hiking, she soon finds herself turned around, lost in the dense growth and shadows. Night creeps in, bringing with the darkness subtle sounds of movement around her, the pulsing terror of unseen eyes on her.

There’s something in the woods…

A desperate young man who hopes to be more than just a friend to the woman vows to find her. The situation goes from bad to worse when the officer in charge of

Twenty two year old Eileen Hershberger, has gone missing in a remote area of the Ashlough Forest. Once you wander off one of the main trails, it is easy to get lost. The Police would not send out a search party for a least forty eight hours. Officer Carla Delago was in charge of the Hershberger case. She was coming up empty handed. Five days later, Eileen camera was found. It had about a dozen shot that were taken at night. Eilleen's brother Chris, brings the pictures to officer Delago. He tries ...more

What a deeply silly book. Characters who act in unbelievable ways, implausible situations, a killer that doesn't make sense. Oy vey.

Hard to say which character bugged me the most. Todd, who I thought at first was mentally disabled, but, no, was just a real weirdo, I guess. Also, incredibly stupid. Or maybe it was "Switchblade" Anna. I call her "Switchblade" because she's the kind of character who always knows whatever the author needs a character to know. Let's just say Anna knows a LOT about a

This is a new book by Darcy Coates, and it was completely different from anything I've read by her before. I haven't read all of her books, but enough to know she seems to have a certain genre and style. This was new territory for this author, instead of the story taking place in a haunted house, most of the action took place in the woods. Not just any woods, but old-growth primeval forest. This was a really, really great novel. The characters all had distinct personalities that were consistent. ...more

I have read a few books by this author and she is quickly becoming one of my faves. This one is a bit different-the others I have read by her all center around a haunting of some sort. This is a lost in the woods horror story on every level. Just layers and layers of wtf just happened and oh no! It is an easy read you don’t want to put down. And the ending is a nice twist. Highly recommend if horror is your thing. 4.5 stars

Some really good moments, a few twists and surprises. This follows a group that goes into the forest searching for the lead character's missing sister, who vanished while hiking. Another story line involves a detective piecing together the puzzle from her end. The story dragged in a few places. Overall, I was more intrigued by the group in the forest and the obstacles they confronted. A pretty solid read.

Despite the rough start and the Scooby Doo vibes I got from the gang, the book managed to suddenly grab hold of me and didn't let go until the end. It's very rare that a book can pull me back from a "meh" beginning so thoroughly, hence the urge to actually write a review for a change.

I went from "these people are annoying as hell" to cheering them on.

Well, most of them.

So yeah, not a great start but still came out at 4 stars for me.

The Scooby Do hang heads out on a rescue mission....

....into the forest, completely unprepared, except for "Velma," and that's not enough to get them safely home again. Maybe if they'd had the dog.
I found most of the characters irritating and very foolish. I knew what was hunting them in the first quarter of the book, if not exactly who. I almost quit reading half way through, then speed read to the last quarter when the detective work started coming together. I gave this 2 stars instead of one

This was a very unique and fresh tale. I loved it. Being a fan of horror, suspense and thriller you get a lot of hauntings and murders, but this twisty book takes you on an unexpected ride leading you down one path of a creepy, hailunted, monster-filled forest just to turn and lead you in a whole other direction. Excellent writing. Great scares. Fantastic characters. Delicious ending.

A very good to start but then it became plodding. Way longer than needed to be. The ending was very surprising and some good things came at the end.
Really good! Good plot, lots of action, wide cast of characters...

However, at 93% there’s an embarrassing editing mistake...two of the female characters names were mixed up. At a fairly climactic point...just sloppy.

Mystery/Police Procedural With a Soupçon of Horror

I enjoyed this suspenseful, well-written book with its smart mix of genres. The main storyline was twofold:
1) a small group of friends search for a 22 year old woman, missing after hiking up a mountain. Dense, old-growth forests cover the mountain—blocking out the sky by day and turning everything frighteningly dark at night.
2) police officers of a nearby touristy town are used to reports of inexperienced hikers, who go missing but are rarely f

Ton of action, but a bit skippy

I give this a 4- rating. It just misses being a solid 4. Coates does an excellent job of plopping the reader straight into the action and then doubles back and fills in the "how did we get here" quite well until the last 75 pages or so and then the backtracking becomes too abrupt and worse, abbreviated. It's like Coates got tired of writing the story and just wanted it to be over. I really enjoyed the suspense, and reading this before a camping trip is probably a m

OK. This book has the typical horror story group of teenagers: the jock, the hot, dumb blonde, the smart girl, the nerd, and the serious guy. In addition there’s that old standby—the detective who drinks too much and cares too little.

The setting is as cliche as the cast of characters—a big, dark forest. A forest so big and so dark that you are irrevocably lost if you take so much as two steps off the trail.

What is NOT cliche is how Coates makes all of this work. “Craven Manor” was ok at best, bu
